Then I listened to Bastro, Diablo Guapo.[1]

[1]OK, so the first time I saw Bastro, I hated them. I think I just wasn't in the mood for the assault of sound that is a Bastro performance. And John McEntire totally freaked me out. He played drums at the speed of light, was half naked and had pierced nipples (this was not anything like common back in the early 90's) and he was sort of...twitchy. Those of you who have seen Robyn Hitchcock perform may know what I'm talking about. Anyway, he was so spectacular a drummer that I wasn't sure if he was human. Now, well, I'm dreadfully sorry that I just gaped at John McEntire's antics the whole show and didn't really listen to the lyrics. I later re-discovered Bastro at a loft party celebrating a record release of Red Red Meat. The drummer lived in my building, so they were kind enough to invite us, knowing that we listened to a lot of music (believe me, you knew what everyone else was doing in that building. This is the place described in my Eat the Roach entry). Anyway, no one was minding the stereo and I was bored, so I popped this in. It was like falling in love all over again.
