Which one of you bastards didn't vote?

No, seriously, if you live and Florida and you didn't vote, A POX ON YOU! Half of you didn't vote, so it's got to be someone's fault.

I'm totally amazed that if Gore loses, Ralph Nader really *will* have made a difference. The guy isn't going to get Federal Campaign funds four years from now, and yet he has obviously made a HUGE difference in the outcome of the election. Who would have thought such a small percentage of votes could matter? Obviously, all you rat bastards who didn't vote.

Yeah, I'm being harsh. I have no sympathy for y'all. Especially if you live in a Motor-Voter state. You know who else I don't have sympathy for? The Democratic party. If y'all lose, then you deserved it. Maybe you should have listened to your more progressive constituency instead of tear-gassing and billy-clubbing them at the convention, as blivet pointed out.

And frankly, the congress is so close now that if Strom Thurmon or Jessie Helms drop dead[1], the Senate mix will flip to the Democrats. Either way, no one has a mandate. It's going to be a contentious four years, in any case.

OH! And Missouri elected a dead guy[2]! What a thrill that must be for his widow. I was happy to hear that she accepted from her "family farm in Central Missouri". It's great that she's a "down-state democrat" because I know how things go in states like that. Illinois and Missouri both have a lot of acreage in rural areas but very large population bases in the city(ies). Whenever Republicans don't win, they blame it on the city folks. They can't do that this time, IMHO, because she's legitimately not from St. Louis or Kansas City.

I am sad that Chuck Robb lost. He's the only non-Libertarian for whom I voted (and ironically, the only race that I think my Virginia vote might have mattered anyway), and although I don't much like him, Allen makes my skin crawl. There's the VDOT stupidity and/or corruption, there's his staunch pro-life stance[3] and then there's the fact of his waffling, shaky stance on the second amendment[4].

[1]Normally, I'd never think such a thing, but it's been pointed out ot me that 5 congrefs elected last time didn't make it to the swearing in day. I also didn't know that the governors of North and South Carolina are both Democrats. That surprised me.

[2]For those of you unfamiliar, John Ashcroft was the Missouri governor that wouldn't dance at his inaugural ball. Dancing is EVIL, see. I'd like to remind y'all that Footloose was set in Missouri. Now I could forgive Ashcroft this particular religious bizarreness, but for one thing: We got behind him for a good distance while driving in Washington, and the guy drives like he's drunk. Watching him endanger himself and others, made me think less of him than his unusual religious beliefs.

[3]I have kind of a bizarre opinion on this, and since that's enough material for another entry, I'm not going to get into it here. I will say that ideally, it's not a federal issue or even an issue for government at all. They shouldn't fund it nor should they rule on the legality or illegality of a medical procedure. Doctors take an oath to "do no harm", and you have to trust in that.

[4]I do not presently own a gun (though that could change at any time)[5], but I firmly believe that the second amendment was put there to protect us from our own government. The government should be a little afraid of a revolt by the people -- there's less and less to keep them in check these days. I do believe people should be punished for violating the gun laws that are on the books. Say what you will about Virginia providing all the guns for DC and Maryland, but when you enter our state, there's a big sign that says "Illegal Gun? EXILE. Five years in a Virginia Prison"...and they mean it. The great irony is that because the 4th Amendment has been so weakened in recent years that you're just as likely to have your car searched when pulled over for...well...anything, so this is a genuine threat.

[5]Owning a gun is an enormous responsibility, and one I take very seriously. Right now, I'm not sure I'm willing to live up to that.
