The Fat Trap

If you read Tara Parker Pope’s article The Fat Trap, you might be led to believe that weight loss is difficult and maintaining a weight loss is a herculean feat. This is just not true.

A four-year post-weight loss study by the NIH shows that motivated people *do* keep weight off. I weigh 50 [...]

The Twinkie Diet

On Monday, Tino shared an article with me about what will henceforth be known as the Twinkie Diet. It was interesting, but I didn’t feel it was actually news. I figured that the Calories-In=Calories-Out obsessed crowd would be all over it, and that Anthony Colpo would likely lead the charge. He did [...]

Just for the heck of it…

I entered the suggested “safety and comfort” reducing diet for my ideal weight into Fitday.

It’s a little short on potassium and calcium, but those could be brought up with the “clear broth” suggested if it were made with bones. Potassium can be supplemented with NoSalt.

Here’s the food list. Pretty standard diet material.

I’d lose [...]

The Ketogenic Diet

This is a review of Lyle McDonald’s The Ketogenic Diet: A complete guide for the Dieter and Practitioner. I’ve also recently read a couple of his other books, but after thinking about it a while, I learned the most from this one.

I’ve had this sitting around for a while, and I didn’t read it [...]

Low-Carb Diets and Metabolism, Part Deux (Electric Boogaloo)

This time, I’m launching right in so I don’t get distracted. Part one is here.

Once you’ve gone low-carb for a long time, whether you’re paleo or not, it’s hard to go back without gaining weight. Many people who’ve been on a low-carb diet for a long time claim that they gain from consuming [...]

Low-Carb Diets and Metabolism

I’ve been seeing reasoned debate about the effect of long-term low-carb diets for a while now, but this last week, things kind of exploded into a yelling fest.

Within what I can only describe a mean-spirited and pointlessly rude blog post from Matt Stone, there’s one interesting nugget of possible truth:

“…remember that prolonged dieting (this one, [...]

Snacking

While poking around on the web for info about The Leptin Diet , I saw a lot of people (incidentally, all were women) saying that it was too hard or totally unrealistic to not eat for five or six hours or to let 11 to 12 hours pass between dinner and breakfast. … If you really can’t go that long without eating, you either aren’t eating enough at meals, or your meal choices simply don’t have enough [...]

Post-Reducing Diet

Now that I’ve reached my goal weight, I have to maintain it. This is one of the most obvious things about weight loss, but it is the most misunderstood. If you’ve hung around diet boards very long, you’ll see that the biggest reason people decide to end their reducing diet is because they [...]

Dr. Gundry’s Diet Evolution

I was interested in reading this particular book after seeing it mentioned in several of my usual nutrition haunts.

There’s useful information within, and there are a few recipes I’ll try.1 I could, in fact, do his Phase 1 diet with little difficulty. Beyond that? It’s not something I’m going to do, and where it winds [...]

Calories In = Calories Out

I could write ten blog posts about this subject, unfortunately. Most of my complaints come down to the fact that the proper way to state that is Calories In = Calories “Out”. The next thing out of the mouth of Conventional Wisdom is that “a calorie is a calorie.” Nothing allows for [...]
