So, just today I heard about another dumb, misguided attempt to keep kids from smoking: the Maryland "out of reach" program. Get this: They think that by putting the cigarettes 'out of reach' of minors, they will make them harder to buy. Note that they did not say 'harder to steal', they said 'harder to buy'. This law (being championed by the Montgomery County anti-smoking league, or some such) calls for the smokes to be put on higher shelves.
Oh, that will help. Never mind that the minors who are likely to smoke (teenagers) are as tall as adults. Really, they are trying to put the cigarettes out of reach of little kids. I've got news for you ijits: height and age are a lousy correlation, and the little kids who won't be able to reach the cigarettes are pretty unlikely to be interested in them anyway.
Man, the gubmint just seems to get dumber by the day.
