8/98 Three Ridges, (about 8 miles hiked, round trip)
This whole mess began with this randomly chosen hike beginning at Reed's Gap. I picked a spot where I could leave the car, and I stepped out onto the AT. This was not an easy choice for a first hike, and it was a very hot day. I had enough gear to camp, but I decided I would merely set up my tent, cook lunch, rest and return to the car.
I made it to roughly that 21 mile mark on three ridges. I couldn't face any more climbing, so I just stopped there.
It was the first time I'd seen an AT shelter and I met my first nut: a guy calling himself Walker.
I must have liked something about it, because I went forward with my plans to hike the trail the next year. At this point, I was trying to figure out how I could take the time off work. Eventually, I settled on taking half the time and attempting to do the north half of the trail.
