Giant World of Media

I'm unaccountably cheerful today.  Last time I was this awake and cheerful, I got laid off.  Let's hope that was a coincidence.

I do feel bad about not getting up when I was lucid at 8:15.  Instead, I fell back asleep and got up at 9:10.  Since I decided to watch the season finale of a cable show I happen to like, I didn't get to work until 10:30.  I don't feel bad about watching the TV in the morning because this show happens to be a product of GiantMediaCo, so I'm supporting the cause, yes?  I didn't know such moral dilemmas came with this job.

Speaking of TV, Tino and I bought a DVD player for Reston.  It seems goofy to have two of them, but that $200 made me very happy.  I love having a DVD player available.  We never seem to watch things on tape any more, and with the advent of netflix, I don't see that changing any time soon.  We watched Croupier, which was quite good.

State and Main, which we watched this weekend, was also good.  It had some plot elements that seemed to have wound up on the cutting room floor -- there were at least two scenes that were significant about which nothing was said ever again.  Even considering that, the movie was entertaining.  I got one belly laugh  (and many snickers) out of it, which makes it time well spent[1].

The worst part about buying the other DVD player is that, ostensibly, my computer plays DVDs.  Based on my experience with that "feature", I'd say it's only for a DVD watching emergency.  You know, if someone sent me a DVD with Special Secret Information on it and it was set to self-destruct in a few minutes[2], then I'd use the Toshiba to watch it.  Since I'm not a spy, I don't see that happening either.

[1]If you've seen it, and you want to know what provoked the laughter, write me and I'll tell you.

[2]See, if it self-destructed in 30 seconds, like Maxwell Smart's messages always did, then I'd be fucked because it would explode the computer.  It takes an eternity to actually get a DVD spinning and reading.
