Link Down. Cable Problem?

The Sun with which my employer has provided me came out of the box broken. Why am I not surprised? Their hardware used to be more reliable than it is now. I'm sort of sorry I didn't just build a Linux box at my desk and use it as my main machine. I can charge back the machine to them or it can just be my machine forever.

Granted, building and installing a Linux would be a challenge for me, but what else should I be doing at work? I'm just not that familiar with the Linux way of doing things because I always use Suns, and I haven't assembled a machine from parts for a Loooooong time. As I recall, there's no magic involved, but I don't think I've ever built a PC and then installed Linux on it. I think I've only installed Windoze on a home-built box. From what everyone says, Linux is much more graceful about dealing with hardware.

Unfortunatly, I think it was too much work for my boss to obtain this machine for me to abandon it just yet. I mean, he'd have to sign the expense report if I ceded the machine back to them anyway.

I am such a dork, but now I can't wait for the Sci-Fi channel's mini-series adaptation of Dune. Yesterday, I didn't even know about it and it's already on on Sunday. Make no mistake: I liked the Lynch adaptation, but this one promises to be completely different. It's also six hours, which is a much more reasonable amount of time to deal with a book that long and complex.

I'll miss Kyle MacLachlan, and I'm sort of pissed at William Hurt for being in Lost in Space at all, but what can you do? The other people in the new one don't really have enough credits to have a picture of them on IMDB, so I haven't a clue who they are. The chick playing Chani has only been in Swedish films and they guy playing Shaddam has mostly been in Italian films.

The odd thing about the whole series is that Brian Herbert, who is continuing it (well, prequeling it really) from his father's notes, seems to be drawing fairly heavily on the Lynch film. Frank Herbert does have a writing credit on the Lynch version, so maybe he helped Lynch with some visualizations from his own notes. Or maybe Brian Herbert IS cribbing from the film.

I, for one, do not know.

Time to call the title company and see if I can have my money today. I'm starting to think I'm not even going to have use of that money THIS WEEK and that really pisses me off. The buyer has to provide a certified check, which is instant funds, but I'm going to get a regular company check which has to go through my bank's clearing system.

The check is WAY too big for me to take it to the issuing bank, cash it and carry the money to my bank. I used to do that with my paychecks from a particular employer because Riggs Bank (my former bank) would hold a Virginia check (my employer was in Virginia) for 5 fucking days. For a paycheck. Because it was out of state. Bastards.
