28 June 2001 ~ Daleville, VA ~ 9 miles hiked
The only possible water source today (Tinker Creek) was far too nasty to use. This makes for a very long dry section. We decided to stay at the Best Western, along with Mr. Decon, Yahtzee, Charlie and…a name I can’t recall. Tomorrow, we’re going to stock [...]
27 June 2001 ~ Lambert’s Meadow Shelter ~ 10 miles hiked
Today we went over McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs, and both had excellent views. Best of all, you can see the entire ridge you just hiked all the way from McAfee from Tinker. It’s a pretty rewarding sight.
This section (not just today, the whole trip [...]
26 June 2001 ~ Catawba, VA ~ 12 miles hiked
It was very hot today, and it appears that I was chewed nearly to bits by no-see-ums while sitting outside last night. Because you CAN’T SEE THEM, I didn’t know they were biting me. The bites didn’t itch until today either, so I had no idea [...]
25 June 2001 ~ Pickle Branch Shelter ~ a mile or two
We started at 5pm, and we stopped here for two reasons: 1) no water for 10 miles after the shelter 2) a trail relocation which opened June 23 made the shelter .25 from the trail instead of .5[1]
The shelter is in a very nice [...]
11.3 miles hiked between 1pm and 7:30pm
Why is this always harder than I remember? Always.
Today I hiked from Trout Creek, VA 620, where I left off last June, to a blue blaze near the top of Sinking Creek Mountain. This involved climbing 1575′ and traversing Brush Mountain, past the Audie Murphy Monument (which is not [...]
15.7 miles hiked between 8am and 7:15pm
Today I finished the climb to the summit of Sinking Creek Mountain (about 400′), traversed that bumpy ridge full of slanting rocks, descended (steeply!) to Sinking Creek, crossed the John’s Creek Valley (which was hilly), summited Kelly Knob and finished up at War Spur Shelter, which had a water [...]
7 miles hiked between 8:30am and noon
I woke up this morning feeling dehydrated, but I had a hard time getting any water down. The only thing that looked good for breakfast was a tomato cup-of-soup, so I went for that. Since it’s only 70 calories though, it’s just not enough. When I try to drink [...]
I saw Tucker today on Lone Pine and Pachu is hiking with Bacchus, who rolled in later. Trashman is a sectioner who is here too. All nice, very [...]
9/16/2003 ~ 19.4 miles hiked
My shoes really worked against me today. They were pretty dry when I started, but due to the wet grass and fog, they were very wet again in short order. Because of the constant wet and the nature of the metal lace holders on these shoes, my left foot [...]
9/15/2003 ~ 15.3 AT miles hiked
I spent a peaceful night under the tarp. It rained, and I stayed completely dry, which is nice. I did have to pick a snail off my groundcloth though. Ew. It was so dark and foggy when I woke up today that I thought it must [...]
