Who Knew?

Trent Lott recently made an ass out of himself at Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party by saying that if we'd all voted Dixiecrat in 1948 (ie for Strom Thurmond), we "wouldn't be having all these problems now."

The implication here is that Senator Thurmond had the right idea with that segregation stuff. It's possible Mr. Lott was tanked and didn't realize what he was saying, or it's possible that he revealed some truth about his own opinions (imagine that!).

NPR covered it (gently, I think) on today's All Things Considered. The Washington Post was far less forgiving.
