Me and Baby Gonna Rock and Roll

Blivet gave me a shout out the other day. It's OK to link to me when you do that. :) (BTW, do I have to call you Blivet or can I call you by your real name? You just don't *look* like a Blivet to me). Anyway, he's got this wonderful dry sense of humor that I tend to associate with Canadians, so go poke around over there.

When I visited Blivet and his lovely wife in April, I couldn't help but notice that we don't have a lot of crossover in our musical tastes, but I'm very glad to serve up a little Cheap Trick to my friends. And now, you bastard, I'm going to have to go buy Live at Budokhan. It was a major feature of jr. high for me, and now that he pointed it out, I miss it.

I had me a little Babys fest in the car this morning. I listened to Head First at full volume (I have a pretty good stereo in my car -- German luxury cars come with acceptable stock ones [even seven years ago when my car was made], so it was pretty freakin' loud) and sang along...at full volume. Can't do that anywhere but alone in the car. :)

Seriously though, John Waite has a hell of a voice. Now is he a Canadian or am I confusing him with Bryan Adams? The important point is that the stuff I like I like so much that I can forgive him for the rest of the awful stuff that came out of this band.

Now that we're talking about rock and/or roll singers, I must mention Mark Lanegan, owner of the sexiest voice in said genre. I hate to pass up an opportunity to promote Screaming Trees. No one remembers them, and yet they were one of the best of the Seattle batch. I linked you to my directories for him up there, but if you want to check out my statement for accuracy, listen to Bed of Roses

I also listened to some Captain Beefheart while doing my walking last night. I just love Clear Spot, and I can honestly say that I'd never have heard *any* Captain Beefheart if not for T.E. Dunne (though he preferred Trout Mask Replica). I owe an appallingly large amount of my musical tastes to him. He exposed me to so many things that I love, including the aforementioned Bee Thousand[1], which of course I first heard on vinyl. I don't think I ever listened to anything but vinyl in that house. Right before I moved away from Chicago, he acquired a CD player, but somehow, I don't think his heart was in it.

I think that anyone into jam-bands should check Beefheart out -- I believe that genre owes alot to the Captain and the Magic Band (and Zappa, of course). If you're interested, try Low Yo-Yo Stuff or Nowadays a Woman's Got to Hit a Man. Low Yo-Yo Stuff has the inestimable advantage of being a Song About Masturbation.

[1]This is a general interest article about Guided by Voices, and it contains this truism: "The first, best, and ultimately the only reason to listen to Guided By Voices is the fact that Bob Pollard's songs contain more hooks than Babe Winkelman's tackle box."
