5/1/07 Bald Mountain Shelter

7.6 miles (from Sam’s Gap)

I could have gone on to a campsite today, but this is a nice site and I wanted to stay here. Also, I thought the elevation (5500′) would make it cooler as it was HOT today (90).

Here with me are Red Arm, U-Turn and Tony Tiger. A trail angel packed in cold beer, which was totally awesome. His name is Bill, and he walked up here from the Wolf Laurel area.

Today was fairly strenuous and this was not helped by me descending from the bald without noticing I was NOT on the AT! Ooops! I had to hike back up and find the trail again. It was all sunshine and blue skies with big fluffy clounds — pretty day for views.

It is 70′ in my tent right now and it’s 8:30pm. I hope tomorrow is cooler as I need to do 17 miles into Erwin.
